 Youth on Mission

Overview for language congregations

“Youth on Mission isn't just the name of a group; it is a goal. It's an opportunity for students to be on mission with God.”
—Judi S. Hayes

What is Youth on Mission?

Youth on MissionSM is the coed WMU® missions organization for students in grades 7-12. It provides opportunities for youth to participate in the six tasks of WMU:

  • learn about missions
  • pray for missions
  • support missions
  • do missions and witness
  • develop spiritually towards a missions lifestyle
  • participate in the work of the church and the denomination

Through Youth on Mission, young people . . .

  • learn to discover God in everyday experiences
  • experience God for Who He is
  • participate in God's work in the world
  • develop a Christian worldview
Youth on Mission is a great option for small churches or new churches that have a small number of youth.

Who can be a member of Youth on Mission?

Any students in grades 7-12, female and male, can be members of Youth on Mission. Young people do not have to be members of the church. They can be from other churches or have no church background. Students who are not Christians can be members of Youth on Mission. Through Youth on Mission they will learn about God's love for them and, hopefully, choose Christ as their Savior.

When does Youth on Mission meet?

Youth on Mission meets whenever it is convenient for the youth and their leaders. Groups may meet once a week, on Wednesday evenings, or on Sunday afternoons/evenings. They may meet once a month. Groups can meet in homes or at the church. When and where depend entirely on the needs of the youth group and their leaders in a particular church.

How is Youth on Mission organized?

Youth on Mission is organized into small groups. There may be one group or several groups. There may be a single group for all the youth of the church. There may be groups for older youth or younger youth. Some churches, with large youth groups, may want to form several small groups based on grade in school or age. The structure depends on what is best for a church and its youth group.

Who leads Youth on Mission?

Youth on Mission is led by Youth on Mission leaders and by Youth on Mission members. Leaders should be chosen by the church. Both males and females should be leaders if possible. Leaders for Youth on Mission should …

  • love God and students
  • be active members of the church
  • live a missions lifestyle
  • be patient
  • share leadership with students
  • be available to mentor and guide students
  • have a passion for missions
Age is not a factor. Leaders may be college students or senior adults. They do, however, need an open mind and value the input of the youth in the group.

Youth on Mission members may help lead a group by planning some of its activities or missions projects. They should be involved according to their abilities and maturity.

Things to remember:

  • You do not need a large group of youth to have Youth on Mission.
  • You do not need a large amount of money to have Youth on Mission.
  • You do need commitment.
  • You do need to always seek God's guidance in what the group will do.
