 Women on Mission

Overview for language congregations

“For we are laborers together with God” (1 Corinthians 3:9 KJV).

This verse is called the permanent watchword of Woman’s Missionary Union®. It explains that all we do is possible only as we work together with God.

What is Women on Mission?

Women on Mission® is the organization of WMU® for women 18 years of age and older. It is designed to encourage women to grow in their knowledge of Christ and His missions plan. It strives to give every person the opportunity to hear and respond to the gospel.

Members of Women on Mission do these things. We call these the tasks of WMU:

  • learn about missions
  • pray for missions
  • support missions
  • do missions and witness
  • develop spiritually toward a missions lifestyle
  • participate in the work of the church and the denomination
Sisters Who Care is the African American expression of Women on Mission.

Who can be a member?

Any woman can be a member, even if she's not a member of your church.

When does Women on Mission meet?

Anytime that is convenient for the women. Be flexible. Choose morning, evening, weekday, or weekend.

How is it organized?

Women on Mission is made up of one or more of the following groups:

  • Bible study group
Focuses on helping women grow spiritually as they learn about missions. Excellent way to blend all women's groups together.
  • Prayer group
Focuses on praying for missionaries as they serve around the world. A prayer group will pray for unreached people groups and participate in prayerwalking and special times of prayer such as the Weeks of Prayer for international and North American missions.
  • Ministry/witness group
Focuses on short-term or ongoing missions projects. This group seeks to minister locally as well as discover how it can help with regional, state, national, and even international mission action and witnessing projects.
  • Missionary focus group
Offers a close look into the life and ministry of both international and North American missionaries. It stays current with what is happening in missions worldwide.
  • SHADES OF REaD Book Club (formerly Round Table Discussion Group)
Reads and discusses pre-selected books brimming with spiritual content, models of the Christian faith, and lessons from the lives of believers.
  • Who leads?

Women on Mission groups need a facilitator for each small group. If there is more than one group, you will need a Women on Mission coordinator. These women serve with the WMU director and other WMU leaders in the church's leadership team.

    Things to remember:
    • Two or more people make a group.
    • Every group should be working to reach one or more of the tasks of WMU.
    • You do not have to have every group to have Women on Mission.
