Women on Mission
Overview
for language congregations
For we are laborers together with God (1 Corinthians 3:9a KJV).
This verse is called the permanent watchword of Womans Missionary Union.®
It explains that all we do is possible only as we work together with God.
What is Women on Mission®?
Women on Mission is the organization of WMU® for women 18 years of age and
older. It is designed to encourage women to grow in their knowledge of Christ and His
missions plan.
Members of Women on Mission do
these things. We call these the tasks (purposes) of WMU:
pray for and give to missions
do missions
learn about missions
develop spiritually toward a missions lifestyle
take part in the work of the church and the denomination.
Women on Mission helps each woman to carry out Christs purpose for her life as
she grows in her Christian walk. Women on Mission activities are planned so that people
will have the opportunity to hear and respond to the gospel message.
How does Women on Mission work?
There are three ways to be involved in Women on Mission in a church.
1. Small group involvement
A church may form small Women on Mission groups because women have a common need,
interest, or lifestyle. Groups may form because women have a desire to fulfill one or more
of the WMU purposes as they work with others. Small groups provide opportunity for close
fellowship.
Each small group decides how often
and when they will meet. They decide how they will carry out the purposes of Women on
Mission. They may choose to meet at the church or in homes. Articles in Our Missions
World magazine provide helps for the meetings.
Groups might choose to focus on
(give special attention to) one of these areas: prayer for missionaries and missions work,
ministry to those outside the church, witnessing to people who are not Christians, Bible
study about Gods love for all people, current missions study, or spiritual
development that leads to a missions lifestyle. Some groups are called multifocus groups,
that is, they focus on all the purposes of Women on Mission.
2. Individual involvement
A woman can be a member of Women on Mission even if she cannot attend a group that meets
regularly. A woman can subscribe to Our Missions World. She can choose ways to
fulfill one or more of the purposes, such as doing missions, on her own. The Women on
Mission coordinator or facilitator can provide information for her.
3. Celebration experiences
At least once each year the Women on Mission leadership team will plan a time for all the
women of the church to come together and celebrate what God is doing. Women can celebrate
what God is doing in and through their lives. All women of the church may be invited, as
well as friends who may not yet come to church.
Who are the leaders in Women on Mission?
The members of each Women on Mission group work together to carry out their activities and
plan their meetings. But the group needs a leader, called a facilitator,
to help the group meet its goals.
If a church has more than one small
group, there is a Women on Mission coordinator. She helps each group to
decide on their focus. She encourages the facilitators and members.
If a church has only one Women on
Mission group, the facilitator of the group serves on the WMU Leadership Team.
If a church has more than one Women on Mission group, the facilitators of each group and
the Women on Mission coordinator serve together as the Women on Mission Leadership
Team. The coordinator also serves on the WMU Leadership Team.
More information about the
responsibilities of each of these leaders is in the Women on Mission Guide.
Where can we find help for organizing Women on Mission in our church?
People in your association are ready to help you begin Women on Mission. Contact your
director of missions or your associational WMU director. They can put you in touch with a
person who can help.
Opportunities for training are
available in your association and your state. When women from your church attend a
training meeting, they will learn ways to carry out the missions purposes of Women on
Mission. They will be able to learn what other Women on Mission groups are doing.
Things to remember:
Two or more people make a group.
Every group should be working to reach one or more of the purposes of Women on
Mission.
Individuals can be part of Women on Mission.
Celebrations can involve all the women in the church.
Women on Mission is a good choice if you have women in your church who are
interested in learning and serving through a small group.
