 Girls in Action

Overview for language congregations

"Give thanks to the Lord. Worship him. Tell the nations what he has done. Announce how honored he is" (Isaiah 12:4 NIrV).

This is a special GA Scripture Verse. It helps girls to understand what their task is in God’s plan for the world.

What is Girls in Action?

Girls in Action® is the WMU® organization for girls, grades 1–6. GA® teaches girls about God’s work in the world. It encourages them to support missions and helps them in their spiritual development.

Girls in Action helps girls accomplish the six tasks of WMU:

  • learn about missions
  • pray for missions
  • support missions
  • do missions and witness
  • develop spiritually toward a missions lifestyle
  • participate in the work of the church and the denomination
Girls in Action has its own motto, pledge, Scripture verse (see above), lifestyle verse, and song. They help the girls identify with the organization.

GA Motto: Go Forward!
GA Pledge: As a GA, I will do my best to live a missions lifestyle that honors God by learning about missions, praying for missions, giving to missions, doing missions, and participating in the work of the church.
GA Lifestyle Verse: "The Lord has shown you what is good. He has told you what he requires of you. You must treat people fairly. You must love others faithfully. And you must be very careful to live the way your God wants you to" (Micah 6:8 NIrV).

GA members also participate in Children’s Ministry DayTM and other missions activities.

Who can be a member?

Any girl in grades 1–6 can be a member of GA even if she does not belong to the church. However, all girls must have the permission of their parents to join Girls in Action.

When does GA meet?

Girls in Action meets weekly to learn about missions and consider how God can use them to make a difference in the world.

How is Girls in Action organized?

Girls in Action may be organized in a variety of ways, depending on the setting, the size of the church, and the number of leaders available. If possible, GA groups with younger girls or girls of all ages should not have more than 15 members. Older GA groups should not have more than 20 members.

Some possibilities for organizing are:
  • GA group for each grade level
  • GA group for younger girls and one for older girls
  • separate groups for first graders, sixth graders, and grades 2–5
  • all grades together
Who leads?

Each GA group should have a GA leader and an assistant GA leader. If there is more than one group of GA, a GA coordinator will be needed to help coordinate the work of the groups and to represent GA on the WMU leadership team. A GA leader may also serve as the coordinator if necessary.

All GA leaders should:
  • be committed Christians who live a missions lifestyle
  • be active members of the church
  • love children
  • believe children’s missions education makes a difference
  • be able to pass a background check by the church
  • be willing to learn
Things to remember:

• You do not need a lot of girls to have GA. You can have a group with only one or two girls and a leader. • You do not need a lot of money to begin GA. • Choose the age grouping that best fits the needs of your church.
