 Children in Action

Overview for language congregations

"I can do everything by the power of Christ. He gives me strength" (Philippians 4:13 NIrV).

This is a special Scripture verse for Children in Action. It helps them learn that they can make a difference in the world in which they live through the power of Christ in their lives.

What is Children in Action?

Children in ActionSM is the WMU® organization that gives boys and girls in grades 1-6 the opportunity to learn about missions together. It is a good option for small churches or new churches.

Children in Action helps children actively explore missions and participate in planned ministry activities. Missions experiences are designed for both boys and girls.

Children in Action helps children accomplish the six tasks of WMU:

  • learn about missions
  • pray for missions
  • support missions
  • do missions and witness
  • develop spiritually towards a missions lifestyle
  • participate in the work of the church and the denomination
Children in Action have their own motto, pledge, Scripture verse, and song. These help the children feel connected to the organization.

Children in Action Motto: Send me!
Children in Action Pledge: As a member of Children in Action, I will pray for missions, give to missions, learn about missions, and do missions through the power of Christ.
Children in Action Scripture Verse: (see above)

Who can be a member?

Any boy or girl in grades 1-6. They may or may not be members of the church. However, all children who participate in Children in Action must have their parents' permission to join.

When does Children in Action meet?

Children in Action meets weekly. Meetings are fast-paced and allow for movement. There are different activities that allow the leader to choose those that are best for the group.

How is Children in Action organized?

Children in Action is organized into groups. Groups may be formed according to the following possibilities:

  • a group for all children
  • a group for younger children and a group for older children
  • a group for each grade level
  • separate groups for first graders, sixth graders, and grades 2-5
Who leads Children in Action?

Each group should have a Children in Action leader and an assistant Children in Action leader. If there is more than one group in the church, a Children in Action coordinator is necessary to help coordinate the work of the groups and to serve on the WMU leadership team. One of the leaders may serve as the coordinator.

Things to remember:

• You do not need a lot of children to have Children in Action. You can have a group with only one or two children and a leader.
• You do not need a lot of money to begin Children in Action.
• Choose the age grouping that best fits the needs of your church.
