Christmas in August 2010
Each August, Southern Baptist congregations give specific items for missionaries to use in their ministries. Encourage churchwide participation in Christmas in August!
Things to remember:
- Pray and choose your missionary for Christmas in August. We suggest the missionary below, but others are presented in several WMU® magazines as well as at www.namb.net (enter "Christmas in August" in the search box.
- Announce the project. Provide a list of the items and tell where and when to leave gifts.
- Send only new items that appear on the list. You don't have to include everything that is on the list, since other churches also participate.
- Include a self-addressed, stamped postcard so that the missionary can let you know he received your gift.
- Do not wrap items separately. If you want, you can wrap the box(es) with gift wrap before wrapping it (them) with heavy brown paper for mailing.
- Check for correct postage.
- Pray for the missionary, his ministry, and the people he serves.
Larry Gaines is the director of New Life Baptist Mission, an inner-city ministry in Hamilton, Ohio. The ministry provides 100–200 hot lunches, four days a week, and 50–100 sack lunches on Saturdays. It also provides groceries and clothes to 500–600 families each month. Personal hygiene items are needed, because people can't buy those with food stamps. They include some of these items for each family or person who receives groceries, as well as for people who ask only for those types of things. They need Bibles in English and in Spanish because the Hispanic population of the area has grown. They offer a Bible to everyone who enters. They may also use the Bibles in the worship service on Sunday evening.
Items requested:
- facial soap
- shampoo
- disposable razors
- toothbrushes, toothpaste
- deodorant
- combs
- Bibles, English and Spanish
- paper for photocopy machine
- ziplock bags, quart and gallon sizes
- products for serving lunches: paper plates and cups; paper napkins; plastic utensils (forks, knives, spoons)
- Walmart gift cards (for buying any of these supplies)
